From Earth to orbit using a single-stage rocket

The ACRA Haas 2CA can deliver itself and a satellite payload into low Earth orbit

New Mexico-based ARCA Space Corporation has announced that it is developing the world's first Single Stage to Orbit (SSTO) launch vehicle that can deliver both a small payload and itself into low Earth orbit, at a cost of about US$1 million per launch. Dubbed the Haas 2CA after the 16th century rocket pioneer Conrad Haas, the new booster uses a linear aerospike engine instead of conventional bell-shaped rocket engines to do away with multiple stages.

On the Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung included not one, not two, but three biometric ways to unlock your phone: the fingerprint sensor, iris scanner and face recognition. Of these, Samsung touted the latter – face recognition – as a faster and more convenient alternative to iris scanning. What did it fail to mention? How easy it is to trick.

Tiny fish leaves predators dazed and confused with venom cocktail

Like scotch bonnet peppers, the venomous fang blenny proves once again that size isn't everything

Small fish want to be them. Predators fear them. At first glance, you'd be forgiven for dismissing the tiny fang blenny as an easy meal ticket. However while these plankton feeders and aquarium favorites might not look like they could hurt a fly, their venom can easily make a predator's blood pressure drop like one.

Drones cleared to carry lab samples between Swiss hospitals

There is still some final testing of the drone delivery service between the two Swiss hospitals ...

Swiss Post revealed last year that it had teamed up with California's Matternet to trial delivery drones, at the same time noting that it didn't expect any widespread use for around five years. We're not there yet, but things are moving along just nicely, with the Swiss aviation authority giving the green light for Matternet's drones to ferry laboratory samples between two hospitals in the city of Lugano.

Finding the flow creates a new way to 3D-print metal

Direct metal writing uses semi-solid heated metals forced through a 3D printer nozzle

A team of engineers has developed a new way of 3D-printing metals that could improve on existing, laser-on-powder based methods. It relies on using semi-solid metals that are solid at rest, but can flow when force is applied, making it possible to move through the nozzle of a printer. Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory hope that the process could lead to higher-quality and lighter metal parts.

A closer look at Festo's OctopusGripper object grabber

As the name suggests, the OctopusGripper has been based on the tentacles of the octopus

The octopus is an odd creature. The mollusc's large brain makes it a good problem solver, it has the ability to change color in double quick fashion, can dart off suddenly in a cloud of blackish ink and the lack of a skeleton allows it to squeeze through the tightest of spaces. But it's the creature's prehensile arms that inspired German automation firm Festo to create a versatile gripper for the production line of tomorrow. We brought you a quick introduction yesterday, so now let's take a closer look at the OctopusGripper.

Tree trunks found to emit methane

In the fight to cut greenhouse gas emissions, we tend to think of trees as our allies, but new research suggests they might not be as "green" as we give them credit for. Researchers at the University of Delaware have found that some types of trees actually emit methane through their trunks, partly countering their role as a greenhouse gas sink.

Transboard folding e-scooter eats bumps to offer a smoother ride

The Mercane Transboard three-wheel electric scooter

Electric scooters have been evolving with new tech and features, but many continue to lack one obvious feature that's likely to be quickly and sorely missed in the urban jungle: suspension. The small, fixed wheels common on scooters look like they'll get jarred mightily by a simple crack in the sidewalk and eaten clean alive by anything more significant. The new Transboard scooter from Mercane Wheels borrows its suspension design from the automotive world for a cushier ride. Mercane complements the three-wheel suspension setup with a sharp design that folds in one swift motion, helping you motor your way from your doorstep, to the train, to destinations of your choosing and back again.

Carbon nanotubes could find use in reusable water filters

Organic pollutants stick to carbon nanotubes, while water molecules are repelled

Although we've seen some interesting alternatives being developed, for now the most commonly-used water filtration media are silicon gels and activated carbon. These materials can only be used once, however, after which they're discarded. By contrast, not only can filters made with carbon nanotubes be reused, but they're also reportedly more effective at removing organic pollutants.

Electrified concrete may keep airports ice-free

The testbed at Des Moines International Airport

It's not just airplane wings that need to stay ice-free in the winter – it's also pretty darn important that the runways not be icy, either. With that in mind, an Iowa State University team led by Prof. Halil Ceylan has developed a new type of electrically-conductive concrete that melts snow and ice. The material is currently being tested at Des Moines International Airport.

Vicious cycle ties warmer cow food to higher methane emissions

When food is more difficult to digest, it means cows produce more methane in the process

As major exponents of greenhouse gases that warm the Earth, what cows consume is increasingly gaining attention from scientists trying to apply the brakes to global methane emissions. The latest promising discovery in this area comes from an international team of researchers, who have found that livestock plant food grown in warmer climates leads to higher methane releases, and could potentially be inhibiting milk and meat production at the same time.
