Eye-tracking, depth-sensing "autofocal" glasses keep everything looking sharp

Stanford researchers have developed "autofocal" glasses (not pictured) that use eye-tracking, depth-sensing cameras and fluid-filled lenses ...

No matter how good your eyesight, there's a decent chance that it'll start to fade at a certain point in your life. Presbyopia is a common form of age-induced far-sightedness, where the lenses in the eyes become stiff and have trouble focusing on close-up objects. Now a Stanford team has developed a pair of high-tech specs called autofocals, which use fluid-filled lenses, depth-sensing cameras and eye-tracking technology to make sure whatever a wearer is looking at stays sharp.

Explosion over the Caribbean highlights NASA's asteroid tracking credentials

Flash of an asteroid hitting the Earth's atmosphere over the Caribbean Sea on June 22, 2019 ...

In a neat bit of fast-paced detective work, NASA recently backtracked from an image of a meteor that exploded over the Caribbean Sea and was able to confirm that it marked the demise of an asteroid that had only been detected 12 hours earlier. Estimated to be only 16 ft (5 m) in size, it was too small to pose any danger, but it did demonstrate the space agency's growing ability to monitor potentially hazardous asteroids.

This mud-hungry Unimog all-terrain motorhome is how Action Mobil does "small"

The Temet 3600 is the latest member of Action Mobil's lineup

From the bulging force of its Unimog cab, to its 6.8-ton weight, to its 11.5-foot (3.5-m) height, little about the new Action Mobil Temet 3600 would be considered "small" at your average vehicle company. But there's nothing average about a vehicle fleet that includes such beasts as the Pure 5000 Zetros and Global XRS 7200. So the Temet 3600 debuts as the "compact, agile" Action Mobil, a sized-down expedition truck that can still climb over talus and float up dunes on its way to providing hotel-like accommodations amidst yipping coyotes, screeching wind, gurgling river and not much of anything else.

Mold grows on the International Space Station on a panel where exercise clothes were hung to ...

Mold spores commonly found aboard the International Space Station (ISS) turn out to be radiation resistant enough to survive 200 times the X-ray dose needed to kill a human being. Based on experiments by a team of researchers led by Marta Cortesão, a microbiologist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne, the new study indicates that sterilizing interplanetary spacecraft may be much more difficult than previously thought.

GentleTent supersizes its inflatable roof-top tent into a two-room "glamping oasis"

Getting ready to stretch out for bed

The inflatable tent specialists at Austria's GentleTent have been on quite a tear since they started moving their tents from the ground to the tops of wheeled vehicles. They've put blow-up tents atop car roofs, pickup truck beds and bike trailers — and they've even thrown them in the water for a lazy float. This year they're back with their most dramatic vehicular effort yet, an XL inflatable billed as the world's largest roof-top tent (RTT). It sleeps up to five people, has two separate rooms, offers glass house-like views, and still packs lighter than many smaller RTTs.

EzLarm forces you out of bed using an app and a tag

The EzLarm app works with an NFC tag (white disc to the right of the phone)

Most of us are guilty of repeatedly hitting the snooze bar on our alarm clocks and going back to sleep, which is why we've seen devices that won't stop ringing (or even electrocuting) until they're taken to a remotely-located docking station. EzLarm takes a cheaper and simpler approach, utilizing a free app and an inexpensive tag.

Over-the-top camper box swings, slides and grows to create bizarre (but roomy) Volkswagen camper van

The Queensize Camper Galeria ForFour concept is a very different style of Volkswagen camper van

Some camper vans have widespread and timeless appeal. Some are more purpose-driven, suited for a very specific subset of travelers or adventurers. And some look like an alien spacecraft clinging on in an evil plot to extinguish humanity one VW bus at a time – or at least one does. There's often a fine line between genius and insanity, and the Queensize Camper Galeria ForFour hopscotches over top it, swinging, sliding, swiveling and folding into a roomy VW van that sleeps four and packs a bathroom, kitchen and full-time dining area. If you can get over the top-heavy bulk and awkward look, it's definitely more spacious and fascinating than the average VW camper.
