Inexpensive 3D-printed lens gives terahertz imaging a boost

A projection micro-stereo-lithography process like that used to inexpensively produce terahertz frequency lenses

Terahertz radiation is a growing field of technology that enables faster materials analysis than X-ray examination, and provides non-destructive, internal analysis of a raft of different types of materials. Now researchers have developed a way of manufacturing lenses operating at this frequency that are simple and inexpensive, but are claimed to produce near-flawless images which could vastly improve biomedical imaging as well as biological and explosive security scanning.

Franky Zapata zooms past farthest hoverboard flight record

Franky Zapata accepting the official Guinness World Record certificate for the farthest flight by hoverboard

A couple of weeks go we revealed the Flyboard Air, jet-ski champion Frank Zapata's latest attempt to launch himself skyward. The Air ditches the jet ski, the hose and the tether of the original Flyboard in favor of a jet-powered board that's reported capable of a top ground speed of 150 km/h. And now it has carried Zapata into the record books for the farthest flight by hoverboard, knocking Alexandru Duru off his perch by some considerable margin.

Weasel takes down Large Hadron Collider

A weasel has short circuited the LHC's electrical power system

A small furry animal today took on the largest atom smasher ever made, and won. According to internal documents at CERN, the Large Hadron Collider was knocked out of commission at about 5:30 am CEDT when a weasel caused a "severe electrical perturbation" when it stepped on the bare connections of a 66,000 volt transformer. This not only proved instantly fatal to the weasel, but it also short circuited the power system, causing the LHC to execute a fast abort as the sudden power loss created a series of anomalies.

Prematurely born lambs kept alive in artificial external placenta – human babies could be next

Human trials may follow, if researchers prove their artificial placenta can keep extremely premature lambs alive ...

When babies are born extremely premature – before 24 weeks of development in the womb – their lungs aren't strong enough to provide their organs with oxygen they need to develop properly. Nor are they strong enough to handle artificial ventilation. The result can mean a brief life for these tiniest of babies. A new artificial placenta that mimics conditions in the womb being developed by researchers at the University of Michigan might provide new hope.

There are a few problems with massage chairs. Primarily, they never seem to provide adequate pressure, offering more of a light tickle than any kind of deep massage. They're also expensive and have the issue that when you're sitting in one, you can't really be doing other things. The AiraWear solves this issue by building air massage chambers into a hoodie that goes where you go. I got my sore back into one to see just how well it works.

Bacteria that are resistant to standard antibiotics represent one of the biggest threats to global health today, and one particular type, known as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), was recently classified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as having the most urgent antimicrobial resistance threat level possible. Help might just be at hand though, with researchers from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) using a screening method to identify existing drugs that might well prove effective against the dangerous bacteria.
