The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is the world's most powerful x-ray laser, and it's designed to help scientists uncover the secrets of the microscopic world in more detail. In the past the instrument has been used to create a kind of mini-star in the lab, and now it's made a "molecular black hole" by concentrating the full intensity of the beam onto a single atom.

Psoriasis sensor gets under peoples' skin

RSOM tech uses lasers to generate ultrasound waves beneath the skin's surface

When doctors assess the inflammatory skin disease psoriasis, they generally do so via a visual examination of the red, scaly patches on the skin's surface. This can be subjective, however, plus it doesn't take into account what's going on at a deeper level. That's why German scientists from Helmholtz Zentrum München and the Technical University of Munich have developed a handheld scanner that looks beneath the skin – and it doesn't expose the patient to any harmful radiation.

NASA's first solar probe to skim the sun at 430,000 mph

NASA's solar probe will zip around the sun at speeds of approximately 430,000 mph (700,000 km/h)

Almost 60 years ago an astrophysicist named Eugene Parker published a paper describing what he believed to be high speed matter and magnetism emanating from the sun. For just as long, scientists have sought to learn the mechanisms behind this far-reaching phenomenon, which we know today as solar winds. NASA says advances in technology have now made it possible to get some answers, and it will next year launch its first probe to enter orbit around our star in an effort to unlock some of its long-held secrets.

Bright spots on our moon could be frost, says NASA

The bright and cold spots were found at the moon's south pole

While the famed bright spot on dwarf planet Ceres got lots of attention in the past few years, it turns out that there are a few bright spots a bit closer to home. Analyzing data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), researchers have spotted bright areas on our own moon which, they say, are likely being caused by frost. If they're right, the frozen water particles could be as old as the solar system itself and could provide clues about ancient water delivery to the moon and Earth.

Drone acts as flying cell tower to provide coverage kilometers away

Researchers field-tested the airborne cell network in Waxahachie, Texas

Drones can bring benefits to disaster-relief scenarios in a few ways. One is by providing search and rescue workers with an eye in the sky, another is by delivering aid, and a third is serving as temporary communications networks in place of those destroyed by the event. Researchers at the University of Texas (UNT) have taken a promising step forward in this last area by demonstrating a drone-based cell network system that offers coverage kilometers away.

A massive asteroid impact could have caused Enceladus to tip onto its side

Cassini image of Enceladus captured in March, 2006

A new study based on data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft suggests that the Saturnian moon Enceladus tipped onto its side after an asteroid collision led to the formation of the satellite's famous tiger-striped terrain. The fractures in Enceladus' south polar region, now affectionately known as tiger stripes, were first discovered in 2005, when Cassini spotted colossal plumes of material extending tens of miles from the surface of the icy world.

Video: F1 drivers battle it out in Aston Martins ... towing caravans

Verstappen takes a corner

Red Bull and Aston Martin have gone together like caviar and champagne (or steak and ale, if you prefer) of late, and that continued on the racetrack earlier this month. Preparing for the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen had an unusual warmup race. They took to the Red Bull Ring to race a pair of Aston Martin Vanquish convertibles ... with camping trailers in tow. Naturally, the race car drivers pushed (or, we suppose, pulled) the caravans to the limit ... and well beyond.
