
America's first spacecraft in eight years that's capable of carrying astronauts is currently being put through its paces during an unmanned test flight to the International Space Station, but fifty years ago, another spacecraft was undergoing an even bigger test. In the first week of March 1969, NASA's Apollo 9 mission saw the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) getting its first full orbital tests as the US sprinted in the last lap of the Space Race to be the first on the Moon.
