One Big Question: What goes into making a color-changing tank?

Static-colored tanks are so 20th century

At the Land Forces conference in Adelaide, Australia earlier this month, a development in military tech was presented that brings auto-camouflaging tanks a step closer to reality. To find out more about the technology behind the idea, we asked Peter Murphy from the University of South Australia, who was involved in the research, a single question as part of our regular One Big Question series: What goes into making a color-changing military tank?

Renault uncovers the stunning Trezor concept in Paris

Renault Trezor at the 2016 Paris Motor Show

The Volkswagen I.D. concept may be as important as the Beetle (according to Volkswagen, anyway), but it's not the prettiest all-electric concept car in Paris, not by a long shot. A real contender for that title is the Renault Trezor, a gloriously curvy, 350-hp grand tourer with clamshell roof, Formula E-based powertrain and "Multi-Sense" autonomous technologies. If this is what the future looks like, we can't wait to go there.

Bony biomaterial may keep kids from outgrowing their implants

An implant in the shape of a section of the human spine, 3D-printed using the new ...

When it comes to surgically replacing sections of missing or damaged bone, there are two main approaches: harvesting pieces of bone from elsewhere in the body, or using shaped metallic implants. That said, harvesting bone is invasive and painful, while metallic implants won't grow along with the patient. The latter means that children will require additional surgeries to swap in larger implants as they grow. Now, however, scientists from Illinois' Northwestern University are developing an alternative – stretchy 3D-printed implants that bone cells actually propagate.

Complaints against police plummet in presence of body cams, says new study

A new research study weighs in on the contentious issue of police body cams

A recent spate of violence between police officers and citizens in the United States has raised many questions about what happens when an organization meant to protect its populace harms it instead. As with so many quandaries these days, technology is often at the center of the debate – namely, regarding the use of body-mounted cameras and the public release of the footage they capture. While body cams can often prove police misconduct, they can also exonerate officers who act appropriately given difficult situations. The simple tech can also, apparently, reduce complaints against cops, as shown in a recent Cambridge study.

The new Land Rover Discovery, on the floor at the Paris Motor Show

In a world dominated by off-roaders incapable of handling mud or rocks, Land Rover has doggedly stuck to its guns with the Evoque, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. Sure, they're posh and comfortable, but they can also transform into genuine four-wheel drives at the push of a button. The new Discovery, with its flexible interior and fancy exterior, might look at home on high street, but it'll also take you to the moon and back should you so desire.
