Wireless "pacemaker for the brain" can detect and prevent seizures autonomously

UC Berkeley researchers have developed a wireless, autonomous, closed-loop neurostimulator that sits outside the head, monitoring electrical activity in the brain and intervening with electrical stimulation to ward off seizures. The device, which the team has called WAND (Wireless, Artifact-free Neuromodulation Device), can record activity at up to 128 points in the brain, and is designed to quickly learn and refine its model of the kinds of signals that precede tremors or seizures in each patient.

NASA probe makes history as it slips into orbit around asteroid Bennu

A daring mission to sample a distant asteroid is starting to get very interesting, with NASA's OSIRIS-REx probe setting off some New Year's fireworks of its own in an eight-second burn to enter orbit around Bennu. This maneuver on the final day of 2018 saw the asteroid become the smallest object ever to be orbited by a spacecraft, with mission scientists now gearing up for a series of close flybys to help them pinpoint a sampling site on the surface.

First images from Ultima Thule reveal bowling pin-shaped world spinning like a propeller
