Mini quadruped robot may bound its way into your heart

The Ghost Minitaur, ready to hop

Although people are fascinated by quadruped robots such as those made by Boston Dynamics, it's unlikely that they'll ever be able to afford such complex machines themselves. Scale things down a bit, though, and four-legged-robot-ownership starts becoming more of a possibility. Such is the case with Philadelphia-based Ghost Robotics' Ghost Minitaur, which could be scuttling down a street near you someday soon.

Formy Bike Grips are 3D-printed to fit the buyer

You don't need to be an ergonomics expert to know that custom-fit cycling products are typically more comfortable than their off-the-rack equivalents. Three great places to live on Mars

Mars has as much land area as our own Earth, so we should have more than ...

Assuming that SpaceX can refuel an orbiting spacecraft, build boosters capable of launching 1,000 times over, establish a propellant factory on another planet and of course, that you've got US$100,000 to spare, you could soon be faced with some pretty tough life choices. Earlier this week Elon Musk outlined his plan to send one million people off to colonize Mars, but there is a lot to consider when sizing up your own little patch of rock and dust. To get a handle on some of the likely settlement sites if Musk's interplanetary plans do materialize, New Atlas checked in with who we'll call realtors of the Red Planet to find out some prime locations to set up shop.

Jedi scientists freeze light in midair to bring quantum computers a step closer to reality

Geoff Campbell and Jesse Everett

Remember that scene in "The Force Awakens" where the dark side warrior Kylo Ren stops a laser blast in mid-air? In a Canberra laboratory, physicists have managed a feat almost as magical: they froze the movement of light in a cloud of ultracold atoms. This discovery could help bring optical quantum computers from the realms of sci-fi to reality.

Rosetta crashes into comet, marking mission termination

Rendering of Rosetta impacting comet 67P

After 12 years, ESA's Rosetta deep-space probe ended its mission today as it made a controlled impact on the Ma'at region of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. According to mission control in Darmstadt, Germany, the unmanned orbiter struck the surface at 11:20 GMT (1:20 pm CEST) after spending two years studying the comet as it swung round the Sun before heading back into the outer Solar System. Because Rosetta is 720 million km (447 million mi) from Earth, the landing was confirmed about 40 minutes after it took place, and the time reflects the moment of reception.

Renault uncovers the stunning Trezor concept in Paris

Renault Trezor at the 2016 Paris Motor Show

The Volkswagen I.D. concept may be as important as the Beetle (according to Volkswagen, anyway), but it's not the prettiest all-electric concept car in Paris, not by a long shot. A real contender for that title is the Renault Trezor, a gloriously curvy, 350-hp grand tourer with clamshell roof, Formula E-based powertrain and "Multi-Sense" autonomous technologies. If this is what the future looks like, we can't wait to go there.

Bony biomaterial may keep kids from outgrowing their implants

An implant in the shape of a section of the human spine, 3D-printed using the new ...

When it comes to surgically replacing sections of missing or damaged bone, there are two main approaches: harvesting pieces of bone from elsewhere in the body, or using shaped metallic implants. That said, harvesting bone is invasive and painful, while metallic implants won't grow along with the patient. The latter means that children will require additional surgeries to swap in larger implants as they grow. Now, however, scientists from Illinois' Northwestern University are developing an alternative – stretchy 3D-printed implants that bone cells actually propagate.

Complaints against police plummet in presence of body cams, says new study

A new research study weighs in on the contentious issue of police body cams

A recent spate of violence between police officers and citizens in the United States has raised many questions about what happens when an organization meant to protect its populace harms it instead. As with so many quandaries these days, technology is often at the center of the debate – namely, regarding the use of body-mounted cameras and the public release of the footage they capture. While body cams can often prove police misconduct, they can also exonerate officers who act appropriately given difficult situations. The simple tech can also, apparently, reduce complaints against cops, as shown in a recent Cambridge study.
