The largest X-ray laser to step up the pace in Europe this month

The largest x-ray laser in the world, the European XFEL, will begin its experiments later this ...

Atoms and molecules move far too fast for the human eye and most of our instruments to see clearly, meaning much of what happens down at that scale is shrouded in mystery. To get a better look we need a "camera" that's several kilometers long, and one such facility is firing up this month. The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL), which happens to be the largest x-ray laser in the world, can take 3,000 images per second of that tiny world.

A few years ago, a team of researchers at Stanford University launched a video game called Eterna. The game was designed to harness the brain power of thousands of gamers, challenging them to design new chemical sequences of RNA. A new follow-up game has just been launched, and this time players are challenged to create a new RNA molecule that can essentially function as an on/off switch for the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing process.

Insect eyes could hold the key to durable perovskite solar cells

The team from Stanford University used the compound eyes of insects as inspiration for the design

A team of scientists from Stanford University has discovered a method of constructing perovskite solar cells with enhanced durability by taking inspiration from the honeycomb structure of insect eyes. The cells, which use a crystalline material called perovskite, are cheaper and easier to produce than traditional silicon cells, and their efficiency has increased significantly since they were introduced in 2009.

Alien stars could send comets crashing through the inner solar system

Artist's impression of Gliese 710, pictured in the middle of the image, flying through space

A new study using data from ESA's Gaia satellite has tracked the movement of more than 300,000 stars relative to the Sun, and discovered that some will pass close enough to disturb the vast cloud of comets that make up the Oort Cloud. These comets could pass close to – or even strike – the Earth at some point in the distant future.

Novel cycling power meter gets underfoot

The STYX Powermeter is incorporated into the cleat

Serious road cyclists frequently own more than one bike, and they often use power meters. The catch is, power meters are typically attached to the bicycle's crank arm (or even built into it), making it cumbersome to use one device for multiple bikes. Well, ETH Zurich spin-off company Magnes Sports has developed a work-around, in the form of a power meter that's built into the shoe cleat.

There is lightning being made In Albuquerque, New Mexico. But unlike the kind that shoots between sky and earth, this lightning takes place inside the Z machine at Sandia National Laboratories. The lighting made inside this miracle of engineering carries more than 1,000 times the electricity of a regular bolt, and is 20,000 times faster – so fast, in fact, that the pulse released would go as fast as traveling from Los Angeles to New York in slightly less than one second. The machine also produces massive X-rays, and researchers have just used this component of the its ability to shake up a long-held theory regarding black holes.
