The Ferrari 250 GTO is the "Holy Grail" for car collectors. Just 36 were made, all still exist, and owning one of these exquisite thinly-disguised road-registerable V12 racing cars is the ultimate badge of success. The world auction record of $38.1 million was set in 2014 by a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, but several private GTO sales have far exceeded that figure, with the outright world record for the sale of any car believed to have been set by a 250 GTO at more than $70 million in May, 2018. With another Ferrari 250 GTO headed for auction in Monterey on August 25, this time in pristine condition with significant provenance, the stage is set for a showdown between the world's UHNWI population for an entry ticket to one of the world's most exclusive clubs.
