
Many great cars have been built across the world in the last 120 years, but the 1935 Duesenberg Special Speedster Model J going to auction on Friday night (August 25, 2018), is arguably the most important road car produced by the American auto industry which dominated the century of the automobile. Only two were made for the movie superstars of the day, this car for Gary Cooper (inset), the other to Clark Gable. Capable of more than 140 mph in 1935, the SSJ was the fastest pre-war production car and the two people who have owned it since 1949 are equally significant, being Briggs Cunningham and Miles Collier, whose collection became the fabled REVS Institute. The SSJ should set a number of world auction records. Here's why.
