Sixty years ago this month, the Space Age was born in an event that threatened to alter the balance of power. It's a story about a beachball-sized metal sphere that stunned the world, was the biggest news since an anonymous fish thought it would be a good idea to set foot on land, and pivots on the rivalry of two superpowers and of two men – one of whom was unaware of the other's existence. This is the story of Soviet Union's Sputnik 1, the first manmade object to orbit the Earth.
